| Nuclear Waste: Not a Problem
Six decades ago the birth of nuclear power was praised for lowering the volume of waste products by a factor of 10,000,000. As Petr Beckmann pointed out in his classic The Health Hazards of NOT Going Nuclear, the nuclear wastes for an individual for a year is about the size of an aspirin tablet — a minuscule price to pay for inexpensive, reliable, safe electrical power. Yet when nuclear power is mentioned as a clean alternative today, the problem of wastes invariably arises. .
Mourners pay candlelight tribute to seven young N.B. basketball ...
BATHURST, N.B. - The seven high school basketball players killed last weekend in a highway accident in northern New Brunswick were remembered Wednesday as loving sons, sweet brothers and trusted friends who will be loved forever in their heartbroken hometown. The funeral for all seven boys brought the city of Bathurst to a standstill as schools and businesses closed and about 5,500 people crowded into a hockey arena and an adjacent rink to hear the service. "You have lost your precious sons," Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet told the families of the boys. "We have lost seven future leaders. For a moment just imagine in your mind what they could have done." The boys' coffins lay side by side at one end of the arena, covered with sprays of flowers.

The Fort Worth preacher is accused of beating, threatening and ...
Wanz has also been a part of the music community in the area for a decade and a half. And being a music lover, he has met and befriended (and otherwise) many others in the community. The "audience," however, also consisted of fans of certain bands that played, who may or may not even know who Wanz is, including some fans who know of and don't particularly like Wanz but begrudgingly came out anyway based on the strength of the lineup. The two nights at minc were mostly attended by the local electronic music community, which has for some reason always been more or less seperate from the indie rock community. I am involved in both scenes, and in the electronica scene, very few know who Wanz is when I mention him. If this was truly "an audience of Dover's 400 closest friends", I also have to ask why there weren't 400 people inside Sloppyworld or at the outside stage at Dada when the Frenz played.
Rendell and his quick tongue return to the national spotlight.
In Sunday's Washington Post Rendell told columnist David Broder that with a 10 or 11-point lead over Sen. Barack Obama there was "no way [Clinton] would lose" in Pennsylvania. But a day after polls showed Clinton's lead had shrunk to six points, Rendell toned down his prediction, telling the Inquirer on Thursday that if she wins Texas and Ohio he was "confident" she would win in Pennsylvania adding "It is a very good state for her demographically and there is tremendous good will in the southeast for her because of what the president (Bill Clinton) and she did for us," he said. Requests for appearances spiked two weeks ago when Rendell found himself the target of unwanted attention over a remark about race and politics. Rendell drew widespread criticism when he commented that a percentage of conservative Pennsylvanians would probably not vote for Sen.

Clinton ahead of Obama, McCain in power rankings
Hillary Clinton wields more power than her two US Senate colleagues running for president, according to a new ranking. The New York senator ranks ninth, one spot ahead of likely Republican nominee John McCain and two spots higher than Democratic rival Barack Obama, according to the website Congress.org. Both Clinton and Obama, however, rank behind their state's other senator. Richard Durbin of Illinois is third, and Charles Schumer of New York is fourth. Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, the 2004 Democratic nominee, ranks 12th, while the Bay State's senior senator, Edward M. Kennedy ranks second, just behind Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. .

With Fido, don't be afraid to be on the go
For instance, my cat yowls piteously at high volume from the moment she's put (unwillingly) in her travel carrier. If she's not in a travel carrier, she is quiet but tries to wedge herself under the driver pedals, which has made for interesting drives in the past. If you are going on a road trip and own a pet that can adapt to that temporary change in lifestyle, you will need to do some additional pre-trip planning. Check with hotels, motels and campgrounds along your route in advance to see if they accommodate pets. If they do, find out if there is an additional fee and, if you are planning to go sight-seeing or do activities in places a pet can't go, ask if you must house your pet in a crate when you are away from the hotel room. If you are going to visit friends or family, make sure they know your pet is coming and are comfortable receiving the four-legged guest.
For many in Mexico, life starts to look up
Crime is down, public health and education levels are improving, and Mexican democracy is more robust than at any time in history. "The country is stronger than ever," said Leon Krauze, a political author and television host. "We have managed to overcome many of the political and economic tempests that used to threaten us." As the debate over illegal immigration percolates in the United States, there are hopes on both sides of the border that Mexico's improving economy eventually will provide enough jobs to encourage significant numbers of Mexicans to stay and prosper in their country. There could be other benefits for the United States. Mexico bought $126 billion in U.S. goods between January and November last year, up 25 percent since 2004.
