| Local digest: GHS Senior nabs rotary prize
Derek Pesta, a Gilroy High School senior won the Gilroy Rotary Club's Youth Speech Contest Feb. 5. His five minute speech on the theme,"Rotary Shares," incorporated Rotary's 4-Way Test that serves Rotarians as a guide for every day living. Rotary's 4-Way Test is 1: Is it the truth?, 2: Is it fair to all concerned? 3: Will it build goodwill and better friendships?, and 4: Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Analise Zelina, a GHS senior, took second and won $50. Rotary Clubs of District 5170 sponsor the Youth Speech Contest each year to help young people know the importance of speaking effectively before a group, to expand public knowledge, especially among young people, of what Rotary is and does throughout the world, and to allow high school students the opportunity to compete for $1500.00 in prize money.
Up-to-the-minute messaging system put to the test
At 3:20 p.m. Thursday, the words "CAMPUS ALERT" appeared on the Northern Illinois University Web site's home page, followed by a message staff members had prepared in advance, but hoped they would never use: "There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus. Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear." The same message flashed out to all campus e-mail accounts, and was relayed automatically to office and dormitory phones. This carefully orchestrated effort to get the word out was largely a response to last April's shootings at Virginia Tech, where a student went on a rampage that killed 33 people, including himself. As campuses around the nation grappled with the horror of that massacre, administrators at NIU took their own preparations to a new level, going so far as to prepare the hypothetical template that could be used for near-instantaneous communication in an emergency.
Peter Roebuck
His ability to impose himself on an attack from the opening delivery sets him apart. Often his uncompromising approach has allowed the middle order to consolidate. Over the years he has attacked the new ball fearlessly, creating a wound that never quite heals. Precisely because he seizes the initiative from the outset, opposing captains worry more about him than any contemporary. Hayden began by leaving his crease to pound Praveen Kumar back over his head. As a rule batsmen try this sort of thing after acquainting themselves with the pace of the pitch. Hayden stepped out in the first over. Kumar fought back with a probing stint that brought two wickets. A lesser leather-flinger might have gone to ground. Nor did Hayden allow the loss of wickets to slow him down.
Lionel's Blog
You heard Roger Clemens say he couldn't care less if he gets in the Hall of Fame after the recent steroid and HGH allegations. Roger doesn't care. Randy does and always did. I hope it's the Year of the Goose and the Gradishar. If I were the Avs I'd sign Peter Forsberg right now whether he can skate or not. Right now the biggest "star" the Avs have is Lappy. Paul Stastny will be back next week to help out but if they want people in the seats (which they're not getting right now) then Forsberg is the main attraction. Bring him back and let the chips fall where they may. .
Rangers Quote Of The Week: 2/24 Edition
Apologies upfront if you attempted to access BTiA on Saturday, and were greeted with a page full of garbled text. For whatever reason, Wordpress absolutely detests embedded video at times. So as to not further inundate you with maddening quotes from the mouth of the annoyingly overconfident Gerald Laird (such as the one listed about two-thirds of the way down last Sunday's article), let us turn our attention towards another Texas Ranger who has raised some eyebrows with his comments to the media since the onset of spring training in Surprise, Arizona on February 14th. This time, however, the quote of the week hasn't been uttered by a loudmouthed player: "He's a professional. He can still swing the bat and he can play everywhere on the field. He has been very successful.

A group of unhappy shareholders called a halt to the school's expansion schemes, and started talking profits. They brought in Career Education Corporation, a young but rapidly expanding company in the for-profit education business. Career Education was a favorite of Wall Street investors. In 1995 it had revenues of about $19 million; by 1999 revenues were up to about $217 million, according to annual reports. It grew through a decade-long buying spree, snapping up small or struggling schools and rapidly expanding their programs and enrollment. CCA was a typical acquisition. Career Education had already bought six culinary schools, and considered them a profitable and growing sector. The corporation paid about $31 million for CCA, then quickly nixed the New Orleans deal and shut down the satellite campuses.
