SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- There's no question our language changed with the advent of the computer. Where our parents had an address and telephone number, we now have an address, telephone number, cell phone number, web address (or, in the vernacular, a dotcom) an e-mail address and a "nick," which is how you're identified for instant messaging. Thirty years ago, citizen band two-way radios were the rage and along with our CB radio we had to register our "handle." My handle was "Rag Mop," and if that gives you a visual, well, you're probably right. All of those identifiers are something you set for yourself according to how you see yourself or how you want to present yourself. We recently went all wireless at home and the final selling point was that we could keep our own phone number.
Oscars: Renee Too Skinny?
Actor Gary Busey called into E! news host, Ryan Seacrest's radio show the morning after the Oscars to apologise for startling Jennifer Garner and Laura Linney while they chatted to Ryan on the red carpet. An eager Gary walked over and lunged at them, kissing Jen on the neck. Tongues are wagging as to why former Oscar host Whoopi Goldberg was left out of a past Oscar host montage video which included the likes of Billy Crystal, Bob Hope and Chevy Chase. Chatting on The View, a hurt Whoopi said: "Undoubtedly I p****d somebody off again." Her exclusion isn't the only talking point. A number of people are upset at the late Brad Renfro being left out of a video tribute to industry people who've passed away in the last year. A rep for the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences told Us Weekly: "It really was an editing decision, because we can't fit everyone in.
Letter about ‘change is constant’ was excellent
Local attorneys who are experts in this field will conduct the seminar. They will advise you on what steps you need to take to protect your business against frivolous and harassing complaints. Remember, if a person works for you on a daily basis, and only for you, then that person should be considered an employee, and paid as such. As I stated in December, we do not condone employee misclassification in any way, but we do not support this legislation because of the language that is in it and absent from it. As always, we at the SAHBA work diligently to protect our industry and our members from devastating legislation like HB 1795, but we can always use your help. Information about membership will be available at the seminar. Hope to see you this Friday. TERRORIST NATIONS ACLU: "Today we launched a new web feature - an ACLU Watchlist Counter to dramatize the absurd bloat in our nation's terrorist watchlists. It wasn't long after 9/11 that we began hearing from Americans who were having problems getting on airplanes because, they were told, their names were on terrorist watchlists. In typical Bush Administration style, these systems had been roughly thrown together with little thought for questions of guilt or innocence or fairness to those unfairly targeted. In the years since, our out-of-control watchlists have received a lot of terrible publicity, such as when famous people like Sen. Ted Kennedy or Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) got trapped on them, or when 60 Minutes discovered that the list included the president of Bolivia, dead people, and dozens of common American names like Robert Johnson and John Williams.
Plenty of achievements amid sins
There are some fair criticisms that Groves should cop it, but for a guy who has been one of this country's great small business success stories, he shouldn't be pilloried for enjoying the consequences of his hard work. Before looking at the sins he deserves a bagging for, let's recap on his achievements. Before this share-market shellacking, there would have been thousands of up-and-coming business owners who would have been inspired to greater things by reading Groves' story. And when business owners go on to greater things, it usually means jobs and wages for others. It means more taxes for governments to spend and when they grow overseas, as Groves has, it also means valuable export income that this company sorely requires. This South African-born Brisbane boy started out as a bank clerk in Brisbane.
II. Challenges and Responses—Making Universal Jurisdiction a Reality
From the initial complaint to the conclusion of the trial and any appeal, cases involving universal jurisdiction present special demands on police, prosecutors, defense counsel and courts. Because the acts in question will have occurred in a foreign country, and often many years earlier, cases rarely arise in the manner to which local authorities are accustomedsuch as through a victim simply reporting to a police station. Investigators and prosecutors may lack familiarity with both the historical and political context of the alleged crime, and the applicable international law. Witnesses may be dispersed across several countries, or the state in which the crime was committed may decline to cooperate with investigative requests. For similar reasons, a defendant may also face considerable problems gaining access to witnesses or evidence that exculpates him or her.
