Future possible for GOP’s should-be candidate

When Mitt Romney made his attempt at a graceful exit last week from the race for the Republican presidential nomination, he handed the convention to John McCain. For all his talk of conservative principles, he refused to give the other conservative with a shot at the party's nod — Huckabee — a chance to derail the McCain train.

The political reality after Super Tuesday was that in order for McCain to lose, Romney or Huckabee would have to drop out. If, once Romney had made up his mind, he had decided to give his delegates to Huckabee and support him on the trail, the combined delegate count and resulting momentum would have had McCain quaking in his boots.

Unfortunately, it's all speculation — despite Huckabee's scrappy wins in several Southern states since Feb.

TV screens to get bigger, smaller

In Las Vegas, the world's top equipment makers gather for the annual Consumer Electronics Show, probably the best place in the world for getting an insight into what devices are expected to set the market afire in the coming year.

Soon after, the focus shifts to San Francisco, where Apple gathers its faithful for MacWorld, its main annual conference.

Below are some of this year's highlights from the two events.

Flash memory

ONE development certain to drive innovation in electronic gadgets this year is the growth in capacity and versatility of flash memory.

So fast is flash capacity growing that these small cards are beginning to challenge hard drives as the main medium for storage.

At this month's CES, for example, Panasonic upped the ante by announcing a 32GB SD card capable of storing more than five hours of high-definition video footage.

PATH train riders travel for free

A Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll released today showed Obama leading Clinton 57 percent to 24 percent among black voters, while Clinton held an identical 33-point lead among white voters, with 60 percent to 27 percent for Obama. Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, estimated that one in five voters in Tuesday's Democratic primary will be black.

World's Top Spots For Snow Sports

The national daily average snow depth over a four-week period between January and February in 2007 was 3.8 inches; so far this year it's been 6.3 inches, according to data from the National Weather Service.

To prepare for all that powder, travelers are stocking up on gear, says Alicia Allen, a spokeswoman for SnowSports Industries America, a trade association, including snowshoes and twin-tip skis, which allow a greater range of movement. Since 2006, specialty store sales of each increased by 21% and 32%, respectively, and may reflect a growing trend toward diversifying snow sports largely dominated by alpine skiing and snowboarding.

"People feel trapped [indoors], especially if they're not a skier or snowboarder," says Bobbi Sankey, marketing and outreach coordinator for the American Hiking Society.

SportsBiz: Spring training now a big business

VERO BEACH, Fla. - On a February morning, where the sky and the “Welcome to Dodgertown" sign are both etched in blue, more than 100 fans congregate behind a rope off Vin Scully Way. Their eyes stare at the wide hill, where five pitchers hurl balls at fully equipped catchers, over and over again. Nearby, other pitchers and catchers lie on their bellies and stretch on grass as finely cut as a putting green.

The languid atmosphere belies the fact that this time next year, the Los Angeles Dodgers — who have trained at Vero Beach since 1948, the year after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier — will get in shape at a new facility costing more than $80 million in Glendale, Ariz., one they'll share with the Chicago White Sox.

Once a six-week haven where little thought was given to maximizing revenue, spring training, more and more, is becoming a big business.

Columbia J-School's Secret Memos Are Incredibly Long

Columbia Journalism School Dean Nick Lemann pulled a hilarious oopsy-daisy the other day when he mistakenly sent his personal evaluation of himself and the future of the entire school to all his students, rather than just to his boss. It would have been more hilarious if it was forwarded pictures of Ken Auletta in a tutu or something, but whatever. Lemann basically says that, yes, we have a ton of money and we are the most elite elitist journalism institution in the history of elitism, but it's not all good because, you know, at some point kids are gonna figure out you can't make any money doing this stuff, and they'll probably go to cheaper schools, so let's figure that one out pretty soon. The evaluation is essentially exactly the same as a New Yorker article by Lemann on the current state of Columbia J-school would be, except nobody would ever pay for such a thing.

Sound Studio 3.5

The Mac has more than its share of capable sound editors, but until now, not one has stood out to me as a go-to tool for everyday tasks. The free Audacity can be buggy and feels unintuitive, while Bias's Peak ( ) and Apple's Soundtrack ( ) are powerful, but with steep learning curves and hefty price tags.

Falling squarely in between those products, Sound Studio 3.5.5 finally fills the role of the long abandoned and much loved Macromedia SoundEdit 16 (which never made it to OS X). Sound Studio is an easy-to-use program for recording, editing, and applying effects to digital audio that can be used for everything from podcasting to digitizing those old cassette tapes and vinyl records you have lying around in the basement.

Sound Studio 3 records audio in either stereo or mono and takes advantage of Apple's Core Audio to provide low-latency recording.
