| Attorneys attack deputy's credibility in explosives case
A federal judge must now decide whether the actions and racist banter of South Carolina deputies are enough to dismiss crucial evidence being used against two Egyptian students arrested with explosives material. Attorneys spent two days meticulously picking apart the Aug. 4 traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of Youssef Samir Megahed and Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed near Charleston. Both deputies who stopped and searched the pair's car acknowledged they made racist statements about the pair - equating them to the Taliban and joking about them being suicide bombers. Defense attorneys argued the deputies acted improperly and lacked probable cause to detain the pair and search their vehicle. They said bullets and loosely packed explosive material seized during the stop should be ruled inadmissible during trial.

I hope that the Spokane County prosecuting attorneys can find just cause to file the civil suit, we do not need this man back in Spokane. New York Supreme Court Judge Herman Cahn ruled in December that Alinghi, the sailing syndicate that represents SNG, must face a boat from Golden Gate YC in 10 months.
Judge Cahn invalidated an earlier challenge from a Spanish yacht club that the Americans had argued was a puppet organization formed expressly to give Alinghi unprecedented and unfair control of an America's Cup that the Swiss had planned for 2009.
It didn't help the Swiss cause when officials from that Spanish club amiably admitted that they were just a legal fiction that would let SNG control the event and keep the money it brings in Valencia, Spain, where Alinghi successfully defended the cup last July.
Cahn ruled last month that the Spanish club didn't meet the standards of the 1887 Deed of Gift that governs America's Cup competition.

Or we can take a stand to change the conditions that make such violence, though not common, much too frequent. Police and prosecutors have shown that after one of these horrible crimes is committed, they can find suspects, arrest them and ensure they are brought to justice. But our efforts at prevention — before the attack, when kids reveal problems in school, at home, in their neighborhoods — have been abysmal. If we're ever going to change the environment that permits such horrendous violence to take root, that's where we need to work. Especially since the victims of that violence, and the suspects, seem to be growing younger with each incident. Most recently, 15-year-old Dominic Young was gunned down during a restaurant robbery in Norfolk. The suspects — ages 13, 14, 15 and 18 — were arrested this week.
