My Turn: Being green is hot -- but beware

Known as the "green guide" the FTC's regulations provide guidance on how companies may communicate to consumers product and service performance on the use of recycled materials, biodegradables or organics. Earlier this month, the FTC held the first in a series of hearings with consumers, business and industry groups to sort out what it means to be carbon neutral, among other increasingly common claims that resonate with consumers' concerns over climate change. The FTC will also evaluate whether existing rules regulating "green" designations adopted in 1998 are even useful and cost-effective for consumers and business.

Considering existing law and the potential for new regulatory oversight, it is essential for Vermont businesses that currently rely on and harness Vermont's green brand to ensure that the green claims made by them and others are accurate and supportable.

State Vote Allows Use Of Gas Chambers To Kill Unwanted Pets

More than 100,000 animals were gassed to death in North Carolina shelters in 2006.

Of the 100 counties in the state, 37 use carbon monoxide gas chambers to eliminate unadoptable pets. The other 63 use what is regarded nationally as the more humane method, lethal injection.

National and local organizations have worked for years to get the state to put an end to gas chambers and it looked like Wednesday it was going to happen.

The State Board of Agriculture met to discuss and vote on a set of new regulations that would standardize, govern and make euthanasia more humane throughout the state. One of the key provisions of the new rules was the four-year phase out of gas chambers and mandate to use lethal injection instead.

While the board agreed unanimously to make numerous positive changes, they removed the elimination of gas chambers from the vote.

Gcap and DAB

The thread title really needs changing to "GCap to close digital radio stations" so people browsing through the forums know what is happening. EDIT 2: The reports I have seen currently read speculation but considering the sources I have seen are reliable (Financial Times, Radio Today, Brand Republic), I would edge my bets that this is sadly true. .

Clinton Courts Hispanic Vote in the West

Every single person deserves a shot at the American dream. That is why I'm running for president."

Clinton, reinvigorated after an unexpected win in New Hampshire's primary last week, has spent the last three days courting the crucial Hispanic vote in Nevada, which holds presidential cacuses Jan. 19, and in California, the biggest prize on Feb. 5 when more than 20 states hold presidential contests.

In Nevada, where one in four residents is of Hispanic or Latino descent, Clinton's push is no surprise. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson spent more time courting Nevada Hispanics than any other candidate. His departure from the race puts much of the Hispanic vote up for grabs.

"Si, se puede," supporters cheered her at a union hall with New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and former Cabinet secretary Henry Cisneros in tow.

Leapin' Labs

Dock diving, a performance sport for dogs, is picking up speed thanks in part to the Outdoor Channel television series “DockDogs." Among the animal handlers featured on the show are John Nicholson Jr. and John Nicholson III of Hazel Dell. Here's a video clip of the father and son training their Labrador retrievers to do high and long jumps in the family pool. .

Lawmakers cut a deal on a $250 million Year 2 installment of the Connecting Idaho road-building plan, assuring between $90 million and $173 million to widen Interstate 84 and begin the process of extending Idaho 16 from Idaho 44 south to I-84. The Idaho Legislature put an end to two things Friday: The 82-day legislative session and the intrusion of Statehouse politics into highway priorities.

DFO: The 2007 Legislature was awful. The 2007 North Idaho delegation didn't accomplish much that I can see -- other than give a green flag for Boise to gobble up much of the $250 million in road construction funds available for the next phase of GARVEE bonding.
