2 law leaders out over handling of slur

Two of South Carolina's top-ranking law-enforcement officials are out of jobs because the governor says they were too lenient on a state trooper captured on video using a racial slur as he threatened to kill a suspect.

Gov. Mark Sanford announced Friday that Department of Public Safety director Jim Schweitzer, whom Sanford appointed in 2004, and Col. Russell Roark, who heads the Highway Patrol, had offered their resignations Friday morning.

A video from a 2004 traffic stop in Greenwood County shows a suspect fleeing. From off camera, the trooper yells, "You better run, n-----, because I'm fixin' to kill you."

The governor said the trooper, who is still on patrol, should have been fired.

Schweitzer and Roark say they stand by the punishment they handed out -- anger management and diversity training.

Wake Forest's Ghee has a secret weapon

Brandon Ghee makes a video copy each Sunday of the Wake Forest game he played in the previous day, sends it through the mail or via his parents to his older brother Patrick, and waits for the phone to ring.

“It usually doesn’t take long,’’ said Ghee, a graduate of Jack Britt High School. “Sometimes he gets back to me that Sunday night.’’

Patrick Ghee always offers a quick critique of his brother’s performance during those calls. Patrick does so from a perspective of experience.

He was Wake Forest’s starting safety the last two seasons and participated in training camp with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks over the summer.

“He tells me if I’m not hustling or gives me tips on backpedaling,’’ Brandon Ghee said.

Has reaction to the Archbishop's Sharia law comments been Islamophobic ...

I was schocked when I viewed the BBC 2-minute video summary on the Internet portraying, I think only 20 seconds after the explanation had started, a black man lashing a young person in front of a crowd of black children who looked dismayed. Why that? Why not try and have a think about what the Archbishop meant? I think the whole reaction is so really stupid. I am convinced that the archbishop is a thoughtful man however, if he is so thoughtful, could he not guess that his remarks would be misconstrued and that the same bad images of Islam and so-called Islamic law being implemented wherever ( real Islamic law is implemented NOWHERE at all and I know what I am talking about) would just come up AGAIN and AGAIN? I dont know but if even somebody like me could figure this out , he could have too, and therefore I am pondering about the significance and relevance of this declaration.

Vivaldi, snapped string is spellbinding

After a brief tuning to get the icy chill of winter to the right pitch, the cold "world of ice that causes one's teeth to chatter," as Vivaldi wrote in his descriptive notes, began casting its spell again.

Just as conductor Lucas Richman, Mitchell and the musicians had done at the beginning of the concert by illustrating some of the sound effects that the audience would hear in "Four Seasons," this little drama removed the barrier that often separates the performers from the audience.

But it certainly wasn't all that one could take away from this concert. Newman's sense of ensemble playing throughout the four concertos was warm and conversational. His duet exchange with principal cellist Andy Bryenton, in the drinking sequence at the autumn dance during the "Fall" concerto also left an impression.

Text-Message Warnings Broadcast During NIU Campus Danger

Immediate alerts became a priority after Virginia Tech was criticized for a slow response that some said might have given the gunman more time to kill. However, communication is only part of a wholesale rethinking about how to prepare for the worst, an effort that has swept campuses across the nation. Mental health professionals studied how to spot warning signs in students coping with mental illnesses.

Busy air traffic controllers keep eyes on skies

It happened too quickly to stop but slowly enough for onlookers to watch. Two Cessna planes collided in mid-flight while approaching Corona (Calif.) Municipal Airport on Jan. 20 as dozens of observers watched helplessly. Within a matter of seconds, five people were dead, including one on the ground. It’s a terrifying thought — your plane crashing into another in mid-flight — but last month’s mid-air collision in Corona makes clear the real possibilities of such accidents occuring. In fact, there has been an average of 30 mid-air collisions each year in the U.S. since 1978, resulting in an average of 75 deaths per year, according to Defense Safety Oversight Council’s Web site, www.seeandavoid.org. According to the site, there are more than 450 near mid-air collisions reported each year.
